The Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes Ventrata) is a tropical carnivorous plant native to parts of South East Asia, India, Madagascar, and Australia. These plants get the nutrients from digesting insects. The pitcher itself is a swelling of the mid-vein in the leaf that is filled with digestive fluid. The nectar the plant secretes lures insects into the pitcher and the slippery rim and inner walls of the pitcher help trap the insect which eventually falls into the digestive fluid at the bottom of the trap.
Fun fact: Pitcher plants can trap and digest larger animals such as frogs and mice!
Care tips: These plants are best grown in porous, low-fertility mixes (high nutrient soil is not required since the plant collects its nutrients from its insect prey). They enjoy warm temperatures and high humidity.
