Hens & Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum), also known as houseleeks are rosette succulent plants native to Europe and Africa. They come in a variety of colours from green, red, purple, or bronze! They are perennial succulents meaning that they can be grown outdoors in your garden! The nickname "Hens and Chicks" is characterized by their rapid propagation habits. A single plant (hen) has the ability to send out multiple offsets (chicks) at a single time. This makes them fantastic ground coverage plants. If grown indoors, they are a great addition to a succulent arrangement.
Fun Fact
Fun Fact
These plants are monocarpic. The meaning of monocarpic is single (mono) fruit (carpic) which means each individual plant only blooms once and will die after producing seeds. But not to worry, each single plant produces up to a dozen "chicks" before the end of its life cycle! Alternatively, some growers will cut off a flower inflorescence before it seeds to extend the plants lifecycle.
