Here you will find information on watering, sunlight and even ease of care. We have no doubt you'll find something for any corner of your house or office with this handy guide.


Aloe Vera - By Plant Collective | Indoor House Plants, Succulents, Air Plants & Terrariums - Toronto Canada

ALOE VERA (ALOE BARBADENSIS)

Sunlight: Keep your Aloe in a bright room away from direct sunlight.

Watering: Soil must be completely dry between waterings. If you notice the leaves become wrinkly, that is a sign of needing more water. Aloe is dormant in the winter and therefore needs very little, if any water.

Pets: Aloe is NOT pet friendly.

Best Spot: On a shelf or table near a bright window.


BIRD OF PARADISE (STRELITZIA REGINAE)

Sunlight: Keep in a bright room with lots of sunlight.

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week keeping the soil moist but not saturated.

Pets: Bird of Paradise are NOT pet friendly.

Best Spot: In the brightest part of your home. Can be brought outside during the summer (be sure to acclimate slowly to prevent sunburn).

CAST IRON PLANT (ASPIDISTRA ELATIOR)

Sunlight: Cast Iron plants enjoy shady environments away from any direct sunlight

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week to keep the soil moist but not soaking wet. It can handle slight under watering but overwatering must be avoided.

Repotting: Cast Iron plants do not like to be disturbed. Repot every 2-3 years, but only if the plant is completely root bound.

Pets: Cast Iron plants are safe for pets.

Best Spot: Any cool, shady corner of your home. They are wonderful office plants as well!


PILEA PANCAKE PLANT (PILEA PEPEROMIOIDES)

Sunlight: Pilea enjoy a warm, bright room with indirect light.

Watering: Water your pilea about once every week, or when you notice the soil is dry. If the leaves are drooping, its a sign that it needs more water!

Troubleshooting: If you notice your pilea is dropping yellow leaves - not to fret! This is a normal process, where similar to succulents, they commonly drop their old leaves in favour of new, healthy ones.

Pets: Pilea are safe for pets!

Best Spot: Ensure it is not directly in the window to prevent burning on its delicate leaves.

CORN PLANT (DRACAENA MASSANGEANA)

Sunlight: Corn plants enjoy a warm shaded room away from direct sunlight

Watering: It is best to water your corn plant sparingly, only when completely dry. Corn plants can handle some neglect but cannot handle overwatering. Ensure you water less frequently as once root rot has set in, a corn plant will not recover.

Pets: Corn plants are NOT pet friendly.

Best Spot: In a warm shady corner of your home. A kitchen would be great!


CROTON (CODIAEUM)

Sunlight: Keep in a bright room with lots of sunlight. Ensure it gets lots of sunlight to ensure the bright and distinct colour will not fade!

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week keeping the soil moist but not saturated.

Troubleshooting: If you notice your croton drops all its leaves, it may be due to repositioning or overwatering. It will grow back its leaves in a few weeks - just be sure to not move it around too often!

Pets: Crotons are NOT pet friendly.

Best Spot: In the brightest part of your home. Can be brought outside during the summer (be sure to acclimate slowly to prevent sunburn).

IVY (HEDERA)

Sunlight: Ivy enjoys a cool, shady room away from direct sunlight.

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week or when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Ensure there is adequate drainage to prevent root rot.

Troubleshooting: Ivy is prone to spider mites. They are similar to spiders in that they form webs throughout the plant, but they do look quite different than regular spider webs. It is best to keep ivy away from your other plants to ensure you don't cause a large infestation. If you do get mites, spray it with insecticidal soap.

Pets: Ivy is NOT pet friendly

Best Spot: In a cool, shady area in your home. Ivy does like to climb, attaching small roots to walls and shelves so ensure it is in a spot that won't be damaged by this.


POTHOS (DEVILS IVY - EPIPREMNUM AUREUM)

Sunlight: Pothos enjoys a bright room with partial shade.

Watering: Water sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry. Ensure your pothos has adequate drainage to prevent root rot. It can withstand a little drought.

Pets: Pothos is NOT pet friendly

Best Spot: In a shady corner of a bright living room. Pothos likes to trail and would enjoy being in a hanging basket or on a high shelf where you can enjoy its long length.

RADIATOR PLANT (PEPEROMIA)

Sunlight: Peperomia enjoy a nice warm room with moderate to low light.

Watering: Water only when the soil is dry - about once per week. Ensure it has adequate drainage to prevent root rot.

Troubleshooting: If you notice your peperomia is dropping leaves, it may be due to draft or cold temperatures. Ensure you keep it in a warmer area of your home.

Pets: Peperomia are pet friendly

Best Spot: Peperomia are perfect coffee table plants! Just far enough from a window, they like be root bound in small pots. Ensure it is kept away from any air vents.


PRAYER PLANT

Sunlight: Keep in a warm room with partial shade.

Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not soaking wet. Prayer plants enjoy high humidity.

Troubleshooting: Notice your prayer plant getting brown and crisp on the tips of its leaves? This is a sign of low humidity! We suggest resting it on a tray of pebbles and water to increase the humidity.

Pets: Prayer plants are safe for pets!

Best Spot: In a humid, shady area in your room. Sounds like the perfect bathroom plant to us!

RUBBER PLANT (FICUS ELASTICA)

Sunlight: Bright, indirect light is best - but they can handle more or less light provided it is acclimatized correctly!

Watering: Water infrequently, only when the soil is dry. Ensure it has adequate drainage to prevent any root rot. They also like high humidity and would enjoy a humidity tray. Rubber plants are dormant in the winter and therefore need much less water.

Pets: Rubber plants are NOT pet friendly.

Best Spot: Near a bright, warm window.


SNAKE PLANT (SANSEVIERIA TRIFASCIATA)

Sunlight: Snake Plants enjoy partial shade. They can tolerate very low amounts of light.

Watering: Water sparingly and infrequently. Snake Plants can handle a significant amount of neglect.

Troubleshooting: Notice the leaves are looking dull? This is likely due to overwatering! Ensure it is completely dry before watering again - about every few weeks. In the winter, Snake Plants are dormant and therefore need hardly, if any, water.

Pets: Snake Plants are NOT pet friendly.

Best Spot: In a warm, shady area of your home. Since they are one of the best air purifiers, and are most active at night - they would be the perfect plant near your bed!

SPIDER PLANT (CHLOROPHYTUM COMOSUM)

Sunlight: Spider Plants enjoy a bright, cool room without any direct sunlight.

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week or whenever you notice the soil is dry to the touch. Spider plants enjoy high humidity and therefore would be best with a humidity tray or frequent misting.

Pets: Spider Plants are safe for pets! Cats do seem attracted to them so ensure it is in a higher area where they can't easily get to it.

Best Spot: On a high shelf or in a hanging basket. They would thrive in a bathroom!


SWISS CHEESE VINE (MONSTERA ADANSONII)

Sunlight: Bright, indirect light is best. In order to get those infamous holes, they need adequate light

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week or when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Ensure there is adequate drainage to prevent root rot. If the soil is too dry and has pulled away from the sides of the pot, aerate it using a stick or fork to allow the water to fully penetrate.

Pets: Swiss cheese plants are NOT pet friendly

Best Spot: Near a bright window in a hanging basket or on a high shelf would be best to enjoy its long, elegant leaves.

MONSTERA DELICIOSA (SWISS CHEESE PLANT)

Sunlight: Bright, indirect light is best. In order to get those infamous holes, they need adequate light

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week or when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Ensure there is adequate drainage to prevent root rot. If the soil is too dry and has pulled away from the sides of the pot, aerate it using a stick or fork to allow the water to fully penetrate.

Pets: Monstera are NOT pet friendly

Best Spot: Near a bright window or under a skylight as they will climb to their nearest light source.


ZZ PLANT (ZAMIOCULCAS ZAMIIFOLIA)

Sunlight: Keep in a bright room with no direct sunlight.

Watering: Water sparingly and infrequently. ZZ Plants can handle a significant amount of neglect. Despite this, if you do notice it begins to drop a significant amount of leaves, this is likely due to under watering. If the leaves are yellowing, however, that is a sign of overwatering.

Pets: ZZ Plants are NOT pet friendly

Best Spot: In a warm room corner of your house - they would do great in a foyer!

PINSTRIPE PLANT (CALATHEA ORNATA)

Sunlight: Pinstripe Calathea prefer shadier rooms, away from direct sunlight.

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week or when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. They love high humidity and would do best on a humidity tray or near a humidifier - it comes from the Amazon Rainforest!

Pets: Pinstripe Calathea are safe for pets!

Best Spot: In a warm, shady area of your home. They are showstoppers and would be perfect to show off on a coffee or dining table. Ensure it is away from any drafts from your air conditioning.  


AFRICAN MASK PLANT (ALOCASIA POLLY)

Sunlight: Keep in a bright room with indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent its delicate leaves from scorching.

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week keeping the soil moist but not saturated. African Mask's enjoy lots of humidity so ensure it is near a humidifier or on a humidity tray.

Pets: African Mask plants are NOT pet friendly.

Best Spot: In a warm, humid room with indirect sunlight is best. They are very fast growing and will make quite the statement with its patterned leaves.

RATTLESNAKE PLANT (CALATHEA LANCIFOLIA)

Sunlight: Rattlesnake Calathea prefer shadier rooms, away from direct sunlight.

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week or when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. They love high humidity and would do best on a humidity tray or near a humidifier

Pets: Rattlesnake Calathea are safe for pets.

Best Spot: In a warm, shady area of your home. They are showstoppers and would be perfect to show off on a coffee or dining table. Ensure it is away from any drafts from your air conditioning.  


FERNS

Sunlight: Keep in a lowly lit room with no direct sunlight. Any direct light will scorch its leaves.

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week keeping the soil moist but not saturated. Ferns love high humidity and do best on a humidity tray or with regular misting on the leaves.

Pets: Most ferns are non-toxic. Be sure to research your specific fern to be sure its safe.

Best Spot: In a low light area of your home. Ferns thrive in a bathroom, enjoying the humidity from your shower! Ensure it is kept away from any draft or radiators.

FIDDLE LEAF FIG (FICUS LYRATA)

Sunlight: Bright, indirect light is best.

Watering: Water moderately, about once per week or when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Ensure there is adequate drainage to prevent root rot. Fiddle Leaf Figs cannot handle overwatering. During its Winter dormancy, it should be kept just moist and not fully saturated.

Pets: Fiddle Leaf Figs are NOT pet friendly

Best Spot: Fiddle Leaf Figs will grow quite large with wide leaves. It would thrive near a bright window. Since the FLF is a great air purifier, it would be perfect for a bedroom. Its leaves also absorb noise.


BROMELIAD GUZMANIA

Sunlight: They enjoy bright, indirect sunlight to maintain its bright colouring and to encourage pups to grow. Be sure to keep it away from direct sunlight as its delicate foliage and flower may burn.

Watering: Potted Bromeliads are unique with their watering. During the Spring and Summer, the soil can be kept moist. Additionally, you will want to pour water into the cup where the leaves meet against the stalk of the plant. Ensure you continue to fill that up with water.

Pets: Bromeliad Guzmanias are safe for pets!

Best Spot: In a well lit room that is frequented often so you don't forget to water it!

YUCCA CANE

Sunlight: Bright, indirect light is best. You may put your Yucca Cane outside during the Summer, ensuring it is properly acclimatized when bringing it outside at the beginning and back inside at the end of Summer.

Watering: Yucca Cane are drought tolerant and can handle infrequent watering. Ensure it is in a well draining container to prevent root rot.

Pets: Yucca Cane are NOT pet friendly

Best Spot: Near a bright, east facing window where it mostly receives afternoon shade.
